Continuing their collaboration, Grace Wales Bonner returned to the adidas Originals archives to give her take on the heritage styles of the German sportswear brand.

Concluding a trilogy of collections, where SS21 and AW20 focused on the 70s, the designer’s lens focuses on the 80s for AW21. The clothes are the result of a reflection on the radical diasporic thinkers of the time. This includes academics, poets, and artists who pioneered postcolonial discourse from a non-Western perspective.

Part of the Anglo-Jamaican designer’s “Black Sunlight” collection, this collaboration incorporates these themes into clothing through 80s-inspired silhouettes and academically oriented graphics. Notably, a burgundy and off-white long sleeve top with an emblem of a fictional literary academy run by Wales Bonner and adidas Originals. It falls next to a burgundy sun hat, college tee, and orange knit sweatshirt with a contrasting V-neck.

A consistent element in the brand’s two previous collaborations, there’s also a new take on adidas Original’s signature tracksuit. Available in a ‘night sky’ blue colourway, the tracksuit top has a cropped silhouette and a crochet three stripe branding that can also be found on the matching track pants.

Kicked off with a Tyler Mitchell photo campaign, featured in the gallery above, nostalgia forms through images taken on a summer afternoon. Create an idyllic leisure space where the themes of freedom and brotherhood are explored.
