A sprawling 60,000 square foot retail store on the grounds of the Whistling Straits Golf Course in rural Sheboygan County opened to the public on Friday as part of a grand opening celebration ahead of the start of the 43rd Championship Ryder Cup.
The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Monday as part of the celebration. No ticket or ID is required for the opening weekend.
The merchandise includes clothing for men, women and children and headwear from top brands. The merchandise licensees are Ralph Lauren, the official supplier to the United States Ryder Cup team, and New Era, which is the official supplier of headgear.
The boutiques will also offer a wide selection of accessories, gifts and exclusive souvenirs.
The retail store, located on the Whistling Straits grounds near Dye Plaza along the Spectator Walkway, has 60 cash registers and more than 1,300 logo items.
“We challenge anyone who comes here to look for something that we are missing,” PGA Senior Director of Merchandise and Licensing Michael Quirk Jr. told the store on Wednesday. âThe Ryder Cup is going to be an incredible event. It is a memory that everyone will always have. But I think it’s lasting memory. These are memories. It’s a way for people to show that they are at the Ryder Cup.
The store has 1,200 volunteers.
The Ryder Cup is contested every two years with golf courses in the United States and Europe alternating as hosting venues. It is recognized as the most unique event in golf due to its team format and loud crowds.
âI don’t think there is anything better than walking through an airport or being somewhere and seeing that logo 10 or 12 years after the event,â Quirk said. âChances are, this is someone’s only Ryder Cup. In order for them to have this piece, whether it is an item of clothing, a headwear or an accessory, they will wear it until they can no longer wear it.
Customers can snap photos for free with the Ryder Cup Trophy at the store Friday and Saturday and the Larry O’Brien Trophy, which the Milwaukee Bucks are in possession of after winning the NBA Championship this summer on Sunday. Free photos can also be taken with the U.S. Ryder Cup team golf cart on Monday.
The Ryder Cup will be contested September 24-26 at The Straits course, one of two courses on the Whistling Straits property located approximately 60 miles north of Milwaukee. The US team is led by captain and Wisconsin native Steve Stricker.
The coronavirus pandemic has delayed the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits for a year.
âAnytime you have more time to do something, it allows you to plan even better,â Quirk said. âAt the same time, today’s world presents certain challenges. Much of the planning and much of the orders were already underway. If anything, it allowed us to tweak it and I think it makes it even better. Were excited. “
Ryder Cup tickets have sold out.
âIf you don’t have a ticket, this is really your only time to come here,â Quirk said. âThere are a lot of people who just couldn’t get Ryder Cup tickets. This is their chance to go out and experience the event.
Even for those with tickets, a visit to the store in advance could prove to be beneficial, he said.
âIf you’re able to get out this weekend and focus on your shopping experience and not be in a rush to get back to class, we recommend going out this weekend,â Quirk said. “This weekend is a lot more relaxed, and you can kind of move at your own pace and you don’t have golf to focus on No.1.”
Parking is free and located at General Parking South, located south of the main entrance to the Whistling Strait off Lakeshore Road in Haven.
All transactions at the store will be cashless and customers will be required to wear masks inside the store.
