CVPH hopes to help breast cancer survivors regain a sense of normalcy with ‘Her UnderThings’ partnership

For many breast cancer survivors who need a mastectomy, it can be difficult to find underwear that meets their needs. Now, a local hospital is helping these women find meaningful clothing for their cancer recovery. For the past eight years, the hospital has partnered with the Albany-based ‘Her UnderThings’ store, which began after CVPH saw a need for services like these for women upstate. .Each month, CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh offers women who have had breast surgery the opportunity to meet with Jackie Keto, a certified mastectomy fitter who specializes in fitting women into the right size bras. “Eighty percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Now try putting someone who’s had a mastectomy or a lobectomy trying to figure that out, it’s one more thing to figure out that they are just not going to be okay,” said Keto. Breast cancer survivor Julie Jock is one of the women who have benefited from the CVPH program. Jock said that after her initial diagnosis, she struggled to find a hospital that would help her manage both her breast cancer surgery and the constructive recon procedure at the same time. “I left the hospital in a very…industrial outfit that wasn’t really comfortable or attractive,” Jock said. “Attracting is pretty important when you’ve been through something like that,” she said. Now, Jock said she hopes other women will take advantage of the resources at CVPH’s FitzPatrick Cancer Center. “It is very difficult to go through cancer itself, let alone something that is very important to our bodies, so we want everyone who has had breast surgery to know that these services are available to them,” said said Lynch. ‘Her UnderThings’ offers a wide variety of garments that support women throughout their treatment, from immediately after surgery, to prosthesis selection and daily wear. “We schedule the appointment. We bring all the stuff for them; sometimes they usually go home, sometimes we have to send them extra things. We also take care of all the insurance for them,” Keto said. . CVPH officials say those who might be interested in the service don’t have to be patients in hospital to get it. “Her UnderThings” is set to return to CVPH in early November.
