True story. Once upon a time, cell phones were … phones.
You used them to make phone calls. Maybe you would text, if you were a bit advanced.
The iPhone changed all that. And it changed more than the way we used phones: it changed Apple, and it changed the culture, and it rocked industries and created new ones.
And it all happened very, very quickly: Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone just 14 years ago. But it’s already almost impossible to imagine what life was like before that.
So this is where we kick off our new season of Land of the Giants, our podcast series that focuses on the most important and influential tech companies of our time. If you want to tell the story of Apple, start with the most important thing Apple has ever done.
In our first episode, we chat with senior Apple executives who have led the iPhone project from the very beginning, as well as little-known Apple employees who really understood how to build the thing.
But the iPhone isn’t just a breakthrough in consumer electronics. It’s a device that changed the world, and we want to explain how it happened. And, most importantly, what it means to live, now, in a world where iPhones – and the competitor’s phones they inspired – aren’t just nice to have, but demanding too.
It’s worth considering because Apple, Facebook, and all of the other big tech giants are working on some sort of augmented / virtual reality headgear that each of them hopes to be the one. Following iPhone. How do we want this story to unfold this time around?
As in the other seasons of Land of the Giants – we have already touched on Amazon, Netflix and Google – we want to introduce you to Apple and the thinking of the leaders who shaped it. And we also want to look at the power Apple has amassed as it changed the world, and the real-time battles it is waging with regulators and critics to hold onto that power.
It’s a great story to tell, fun and provocative. We hope you enjoy it. The first episode of Land of the Giants: The Apple Revolution is out now. New episodes drop on Wednesday. Do not hesitate to listen to it on your iPhone or any other device of your choice.
