Suspect in custody after woman assaulted in robbery near Pitt campus


University of Pittsburgh police say a suspect is in custody after a woman was assaulted during a robbery early Thursday morning. Watch the Oakland report: click the video player above. The incident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday on the 4000 block of Fifth Avenue. Pittsburgh City Police said Jason Moran, 28, was arrested in connection with the early morning assault and robbery. Police said Moran is currently in the Allegheny County Jail, facing multiple assault and robbery charges. Police said the suspect approached the victim, grabbed her by the hair, grabbed her breasts and groin on the outer clothing and pushed her to the ground. Police said the woman was not injured. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke to students on campus about the assault. “It was really scary, honestly, and it was so close to campus. I just thought it might have been me. “I know some people do that,” Megan Suess said. Students, like Liam Beckett, said they were taking extra precautions. “I will probably bring a pocket knife with me when I walk around. but I’m sorry for the girls walking around campus. It’s a little scary,” Beckett said. “I try to be aware of my surroundings, but I don’t know. It’s difficult,” said Bridget Cahir.

According to police, the suspect approached the victim, grabbed her by the hair, grabbed her breasts and groin on the outer clothing and pushed her to the ground.

Police said the man took the woman’s bag of food and ran west on Fifth Avenue toward Thackeray Avenue. Police said the woman was not injured.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke to students on campus about the assault.

“It was really scary, honestly, and it was so close to campus. I just thought it could have been me. I always look behind me, look around. I don’t listen to music. I know that some people do that.” said Megan Suess.

Students, like Liam Beckett, said they were taking extra precautions.

“I’ll probably bring a pocket knife with me when I walk around. That’s about it, but I feel sorry for the girls walking around campus. It’s kind of scary,” Beckett said.
