Michigan is the state we call home, but more and more people are choosing to leave Michigan.
The last census data shows that Michigan’s overall population has grown by 2% since 2010. It sounds good on the surface, but it’s a small growth and it doesn’t show the number of people who have decided to leave in the past two years.
According to a recent relocation survey, there are only five other states with more people leaving than Michigan. These states are New Jersey, Illinois, New York, Connecticut and California. There are many reasons people move, but what makes Michigan so high on the start list?
Why are people leaving Michigan in droves?
The study gives a list of different reasons people leave, and they are listed below.
- Job
- Retirement
- Family
- Way of life
- Health
These are fairly common or generic reasons, but there must be some truth to it. Michigan has struggled to find well-paying jobs for young residents, but the labor shortage recently turned the tide.
Retirement is one of the reasons for this list that I don’t think anyone questions. Michigan is full of part-time residents we all call âSnow-Birdsâ. They chase the hot weather, live in a southern state like Florida in the winter, then return to enjoy the 2-3 weeks of Michigan summers.

Why would you decide to leave Michigan?
The survey provides a few reasons for leaving Michigan, but most people I know really don’t want to leave. Sure, winters can be a bit harsh, but the amazing summers almost make you forget about the cold.
I have a ton of reasons I love living in Michigan. . . like the fact that there are so few wild animals that can or want to kill you. There are very few fatal natural disasters, and we are surrounded by fresh water! If you believe in a post-apocalyptic scenario, fresh water will certainly become our new currency.
I think the only thing that would make me leave Michigan is if my dream job required me to leave the state. Take a second and tell me what would be your main reason for leaving Michigan below.
